A solo unos kilómetros, en el Río Bravo, entre Lajitas, Texas y Paso Lajitas, Chihuahua, se realiza cada año el emotivo festival Voices From Both Sides (Voces de los Dos Lados), también conocido como Fiesta Protesta.

Desde 2013, familias separadas por el cierre del cruce informal en 2002 (tras el 11 de septiembre) se reúnen en el medio del río para abrazarse, nadar, comer, escuchar música de ambos lados y recordar cuando el paso era libre y cotidiano.

• Cientos de personas (a veces hasta mil) llegan de Ojinaga, Presidio, Terlingua y más allá.
• Hay comida, música en vivo, bailes y hasta familias con playeras iguales para identificarse.
• Es un día de reencuentros que suelen durar años: padres con hijos, hermanos, primos… todo en el agua del Bravo, con la vigilancia lejana de las autoridades.
• El evento busca recordar la historia compartida y pedir que la frontera vuelva a unir en lugar de dividir.

¡Pura fraternidad fronteriza que nos hace sentir más cerca, aunque estemos del mismo lado del desierto! ❤️

From Ojinaga, we celebrate the union that knows no walls! 🌵🇲🇽🇺🇸

Just a few miles away, on the Rio Grande between Lajitas, Texas and Paso Lajitas, Chihuahua, the heartfelt Voices From Both Sides festival (also known as Fiesta Protesta) takes place every year.

Since 2013, families separated by the 2002 closure of the informal crossing (after 9/11) gather in the middle of the river to hug, swim, eat, listen to music from both sides, and remember when the crossing was free and everyday.

• Hundreds of people (sometimes up to a thousand) come from Ojinaga, Presidio, Terlingua, and beyond.
• Food, live music, dancing, and even families in matching shirts to spot each other.
• A day of reunions that can last years: parents with kids, siblings, cousins… all in the river waters, with distant authority watch.
• The event honors our shared history and calls for a border that unites instead of divides.

Pure border brotherhood that makes us feel closer, even in the same desert! ❤️
